How to reduce your electricity bill
With the recession looming over our heads, if it is not already here, it has become more and more necessary for us to be a little more frugal when it comes to our spending habits. It has also become a very smart practice to pursue the possibilities of different ways of saving money.
There are so many different ways one can save money that I could spend all day talking about it, but in this specific post I would like to talk about how you can save money by reducing your electricity bill.
With energy costs rising and no apparent stop in sight, it would be wise on your part to begin looking into alternative methods of energy and different ways that you could decrease the amount of consumption. By getting used to decreasing the amount of consumption, ultimately you will end up using less energy and end up paying a lot less on your bill. Just imagine if you could save even $20 per month. That would be over $240 per year. I don’t know about you but an extra $240 in my pockets doesn’t sound bad right now.
In saying that here are a few ways that you can help reduce your electricity bill:
- Limit Usage: Now this might seem like the most obvious one, but many times we do not realize that we are using excess amounts of electricity when it is not necessary. We can walk into a room and forget to turn off the light, or we can leave the tv on when no one is watching it. There are many household appliances that are customarily left on despite us not even being there to use them. This is an absolute waste. Go Room by room and take a look at the outlets in each room. Identify which appliances are connected and identify if they are electricity guzzlers or not. Some do not need to be on all the time.
- Buy Energy Efficient Items: Buy lightbulbs that are more energy efficient, when purchasing other items try and go for the ones that are more energy efficient. These appliances usually will cost you more up front but over its lifespan it can end up saving you as much as 3-4 times the cost of the other cheaper electricity guzzlers. This is well worth the extra expenses up front.
- Purchase a power save gadget: These little gadgets monitor your homes electricity consumption and limits it so that you will not be using more electricity than necessary.
- Monitor your usage: Pay attention to how much electricity you use and when. By getting a better understanding about when the most electricity is used you can figure out how to catch a break
- Pool your resources: If you have a family this is for you. I know everyone loves their privacy but lets say its homework time or reading time or whatever you would like to put here. If you all share a room with 1 light on as opposed to having 3 different people in 3 different rooms with multiple lights on and multiple appliances on you will end up saving on your electricity.
Be Smart, there are many ways to reduce your electricity bill if you can be creative and think about it. Saving on your Electricity is not really a one time thing but rather it is a lifestyle change. It becomes a good habit that you can continue to utilize and maintain throughout your lifetime. It is also a good way to save some extra dough over the years. Remember that $240 per year? Over the course of your lifetime that could easily amass into over $10k of savings. I bet that would make you raise an eyebrow.
