House doesn’t give up on ANWR
Yesterday the House voted yet again to allow drilling in ANWR, mostly along party lines, 225-201. Personally, I am not all that convinced that ANWR is the right move, as it would add a limited supply of oil and would delay and distract from more aggressive efforts to develop alternative fuels. Alternative fuels are the only permanent answer to the energy crisis we face.
In the 10 years time it would take to get ANWR to peak production, a national push for new types of energy could eliminate the need for ANWR in the first place, while securing a long term energy future. Democrats continue to show zero leadership on this issue, however. US Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and other Dems accused Republicans of passing the bill merely as a symbolic political gesture to make the public think the GOP cares about gas prices and is doing something about it. DeFazio’s partisan rhetoric is made clear by the fact that the GOP has been trying to open up ANWR since 1995, long before $3 gas, only to blocked by Dems year after year. So his accusation is plainly false. Support ANWR drilling or not, Republicans have a plan, though not perfect. Dems would do good for themselves to come up with a plan of their own. Blocking ANWR year after year is not an energy policy.
