Ethanol Imports OK

Import tariffs on ethanol protect Iowa’s corn farmers and limit the cost-effectiveness of importing ethanol from places like Brazil.  Tom Delay’s replacement, Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) has decided that lowering the tariff would help lower gas prices. Maybe – at least by a little.  It’s still a good idea.  Farmstate lawmakers on both sides of the isle are resisting, to protect their corn farmer constituents.

Afraid of a little competition? Isn’t competition the hallmark of American industrial innovation? I say bring it on. Maybe American production will become more efficient, and we’ll save a few cents on gas, too.  Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) asks the ridiculous question, “Why does this president want to be any more dependent on the importation of ethanol than on the importation of petroleum?” Here’s an answer – because nations like Brazil are relatively stable, unlike socialist and terrorist oil suppliers like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Venezuela.  Moreover, no one’s saying we’ll become dependent on importing ethanol, just more diversified in the short term. Grassley is one Republican that needs more thought-out sound bites.
