Corporate Republicans Leading Green Revolution

You don’t often hear a Republican say “Tax me!!” but that’s exactly what Paul Anderson, chairman of Duke Energy, has proposed.  As reported by USA Today, Anderson, a registered Republican, has asked the federal gov’t to tax companies based on the greenhouse gases they produce.  And he’s not just any Republican – he’s a major Bush supporter and part of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Anderson is just one of an increasing number of major corporate executives seeking to cut emissions because of a growing feeling that global warming is already impacting the economy and by the opportunity for big profits from new green products.  Costs associated with emissions and climate change include rising insurance rates, or the inability to get insurance at all, lawsuits, and unpredictable, tangled gov’t regulations.  Anderson and other execs would prefer one federal gov’t standard, as opposed to the current patchwork of state rules.  In addition, companies that have taken it upon themselves to cut their carbon footprint have actually seen their bottom lines improve, not decline, as anti-regulationists like the President, claim would happen.  As more and more business leaders join the green revolution, gov’t will face more pressure to get on board.  The President’s new nominee for Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson, is another green Republican capitalist.  Paulson even went as far to create an “environmental policy” at Goldman, Sachs.  We expect leadership from our elected officials.  In this case, leadership is coming from “evil corporate America.”  GOP leaders should take note, and start leading the energy revolution in their own right.
