Are the Pod Cars Coming in the near future?
Remember those trips to Disneyland? Remember riding on the futuristic Monorail? It might be possible that the Monorail themed future was not that far off in terms of transportation. Ithaca, Santa Cruz and Sweden are considering using pod cars as opposed to the normal light rail system. These pod cars would be similar to the monorail style cars yet they would be of a more personal in nature. Allowing for those who would like to be alone to have that alone time.
The thing that is really great about this is that these new pod cars would cost only a fraction of what the normal rail costs on a per mile basis. Transportation costs are usually exorbitant considering the work that has to go into it but in comparison to what would already be paid for the light rail it is a vast improvement in efficiency and not to mention in overall costs and privacy. I think many citizens would enjoy this type of transportation as they would not have to deal with the hassle of stop and go traffic and the enjoyment of the privacy of their own pod car. Recent estimates have listed that costs for the light rail are 100 to 300 million per mile and the Pod Cars cost would be considerably less at 25 to 40 million per mile.
Cheaper costs with more privacy? I know I would be willing to ride one of those to work. No Headaches, No Hassles with traffic and it would be relatively safe. I am on board. There are also a few cities that are looking into the possibility of including pod cars into their transportation systems one of them being Los Angeles. I believe they will wait on the decision to be made from these other locations to see just how effective they could be.
